In January, the Board voted on a new High School Graduation Requirements Policy. One of the proposed changes was to ensure that all MPS high schools offer a semester long elective ethnic studies course starting in the 2015-16 academic year.
A pilot African American History course is currently being offered in a few schools. The pilot course was developed by a team of University professors, MPS staff, MPS teachers and community stakeholders. The team includes representatives from the University of Minnesota's African and African American Studies Department, the MPS Social Studies Department, the MPS Office of Equity & Diversity and the Minnesota Historical Society.
The Los Angeles Unified School District recently approved an Ethnic Studies high school graduation requirement. Learn more.
